 The phone is ringing -- it's three a.m. on a Saturday. You know that feeling -- dread! Blearily, I answer the phone, only to learn that my little sister is in the emergency room. "What for? What are the symptoms? Let me talk to the nurse. What are the labs?" I hang up and am sobbing before I reach my husband's arms. "I think Cari has Leukemia." And she did. The years of nurse's training have culminated into a clear understanding of what it was all for: To gain the knowledge needed to advocate for my sister (a healthy survivor), for my grandmother who has Alzheimer's, for friends, for family and for friends not yet met. |
